Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods which helps to maximise the true expression of terroir, and in 2019 Doña Paula was certified as a sustainably managed winery by Bodegas de Argentina. Continuous innovation in vineyard management ensures Doña Paula produces top quality wines from one year to the next.
The grapes are sourced from Doña Paula’s estate-owned vineyard, Finca el Alto in Ugarteche, Lujan de Cuyo. The vineyard is situated at 1,050 metres above sea level where the soil is nutrient-poor clay. The climate is characterised by warm days and cool nights with an average temperature variation of 14°C, this creates a long ripening period and helps to concentrate the flavours in the berries, while retaining balancing acidity. The vines are trained using the espalier trellis system and drip irrigation is used. The vineyard has always been managed using sustainable practices.
The grapes were harvested from mid-March to late March. Upon arrival at the winery they were destemmed and gently crushed. Cool pre-fermentation maceration was carried out to preserve the primary aromas, followed by traditional fermentation. Post fermentation maceration followed lasting between 10 and 15 days to extract the desired level of flavour, colour and structure. The wine then went through malolactic conversion, prior to being bottled.
A full flavoured Malbec with sweet, spicy and intense aromas of ripe red fruits, complemented by subtle floral hints of violets. A well balanced wine with a soft and velvety texture and a rich finish.
