ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Domaine Courbis dates from the 16th century and has been handed down from father to son since the start of the 20th century. It is now under the dynamic partnership of two brothers: Laurent, who is responsible for winemaking, and Dominique who looks after the 41-hectare vineyard. The estate includes eight hectares in Cornas, five hectares in Saint-Joseph Blanc and 19 hectares in Saint-Joseph Rouge, in the communes of Châteaubourg and Cornas. The vines are planted on steep granite hillsides and their polished wines are wonderful examples of modern vinification blended with traditional viticulture and top-quality terroir. The Domaine Courbis wines are of extremely high quality and are consistently met with worldwide acclaim.

ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
Situated on the right bank of the river Rhône, not far from the city of Valence, the site of Cornas combines the factors of a ‘Grand Terroir’. This one hectare Cornas La Sabarotte vineyard is situated at 70 metres above sea level and is considered to be among the very best sites of the appellation. It has very old, low yielding vines which were mostly planted in 1947 (some are even older). The soil is a thin decomposed granite-limestone layer over solid granite rock, which has poor fertility and is free draining, encouraging the vine to develop strong root systems. The site is perfectly orientated to the south east optimising the influence of the sun on the ripening vines.

THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed and lightly pressed. Vinification took place in sealed stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of between 30 to 32°C. Maceration lasted three weeks during which time the desired levels of colour, flavour and fine tannins were extracted. The wine underwent a malolactic conversion in barrel and was aged in oak barrels, of which 60% were new, for approximately 18 months. The wine was lightly filtered prior to bottling.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
The epitome of fine Cornas, this is Domaine Courbis’ most dramatic wine. Showcasing great fruit intensity, a silky suppleness on the palate and integrated new oak flavours, this is the perfect combination of power and elegance.

GRAPE VARIETY:
Syrah 100%.
