Description
PRODUCER NOTE:
Champagne Collet with its elegant Art Deco packaging is evocative of the Belle Epoque era from when it was established. It is the oldest cooperative in Champagne, dating back to 1921. Since its inception, Collet has been creating Champagnes of character with authenticity, elegance and great finesse. Located in Aÿ, in the heart of the Champagne region, Collet represents some of the finest growers and mainly sources from vineyards which are based on Premiers and Grands Crus sites. Each cuvée reflects the diversity of the region’s terroirs and has been masterfully blended to suit gastronomic cuisine.
VINTAGE:
2008 was initially a difficult year, with a damp spring resulting in challenging conditions in the vineyards. However a warmer and drier August and a fine, warm September helped to regain the maturation of the grapes and resulted in an excellent vintage. The Champagnes of 2008 are classically styled with fresh scintillating acidity balanced by powerful flavour concentration. One of the best vintages of the decade.
VINEYARD:
A balanced blend of 10 Premiers and Grands Crus villages selected during the 2008 harvest. 50% Pinot Noir gives wine its structure, thanks to Mailly-Champagne, Ambonnay, Louvois or Chigny-les-Roses Crus. 40% Chardonnay from iconic villages as Vertus and Avize, brings richness, softness and elegance. The Villers-Marmery Premier Cru completes the blend and adds a mineral dimension along with a touch of smoke. 10% Meunier rounds off the blend with richness and smoothness.
WINEMAKING:
In order to give the wine even greater richness and complexity, the Millesime 2008 is aged for at least 8 years in Collet’s centennial cellars, dug deep into the chalk.
TASTING NOTE:
A bouquet of lemon, quince and brioche is accompanied by scents of linden, acacia and fresh verbena and underpinned by mineral notes. After aeration, aromas of limestone, liquorice, blackcurrant and pomelo are revealed. Clean and fresh, opening with the zingy acidity of lemon and grapefruit through to a mineral, clean and saline mid-palate. The freshness, typical of 2008, and subtle sea-spray notes create a tasty finish.
GRAPE:
Pinot Noir 50%, Chardonnay 40%, Pinot Meunier 10%.
