PRODUCER NOTE:
It is the simplicity of the fruit, the sheer crunchy gluggable vivacity of the liquid, that first established Australia as everyone’s favourite vineyard. It’s what Broken Shackle is all about. Berton Vineyards is one of our longest-standing producers. Having established his own vineyard in 1996 in South Australia’s Eden Valley, after a lot of hard yakka Bob Berton purchased a state-of-the-art winery in Yenda, NSW, in 2007 and now sources fruit in the heart of the Riverina.
VINTAGE:
The 2021 season was a perfect contrast with the previous one. While summer 2021 was the second hottest on record, 2021 was the coolest in 10 years, due to the influence of a La Niña climate pattern. The cool ripening period led to an elevated natural acidity and good flavour development. Some whites in the Riverina were picked slightly early due to rain forecast, resulting in lighter flavours and lower alcohol levels. In most vineyards, crop size was slightly bigger than 2020 across South Eastern Australia.
VINEYARD:
Sourced from vineyards throughout the Riverina region. The vine age is varied, but all vines have been spur pruned and are generally trained on a single wire cordon trellising system. The vines are planted at approximately 1.8 metres apart with 3.6 metres between the rows, to allow machinery access.
WINEMAKING:
As ripeness was achieved the Semillon and Chardonnay grapes were harvested in the cool of the night in retaining freshness. The fruit was crushed, destemmed, chilled and pressed immediately. The juice from pressing was clarified before a slow fermentation at cool temperatures of 14-16°C using a carefully selected yeast to optimise varietal expression. Following very little maturation to retain the fresh varietal characters, the Semillon and Chardonnay parcels were blended, stabilised and filtered for bottling.
TASTING NOTE:
This Semillon Chardonnay is full of inviting aromas of fresh citrus notes. The palate is crisp with delicious flavours of lime and passion fruit, perfectly balanced to create a soft, dry finish.
