Description
PRODUCER:
In 1962, nineteen vine growers from San Marzano combined their efforts to establish “Cantine San Marzano”. Over the years, the cooperative has grown significantly and now comprises over 1200 vine growers. They are now one of the most professional, forward-thinking companies in Southern Italy, with a reputation for producing great wines. Their production philosophy is simple but uncompromising; “passion” and “competence” are the bywords at the heart of their everyday activity.
VINEYARD:
The vineyard area is approximately 100 metres above sea level, with high average temperatures and medium to low rainfall, providing excellent conditions for grape production. The medium-textured clay soil has a good presence of rocks for drainage. The espalier-trained vines are planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare. The vineyards are managed sustainably, with technology being used to monitor weather conditions in order to minimise the work required in the vineyard. A bio-fertiliser made from seaweed from the nearby Ionian Sea is employed as an alternative to chemical fertilisers. Biodiversity within the vineyard is encouraged by the planting of indigenous grape varieties, alongside Mediterranean trees and plants, which are resistant to drought, thereby reducing water waste. Harvest takes place in mid-September once the grapes have reached optimal maturity and the fruit shows good balance between sugar and acidity levels.
WINEMAKING:
A temperature-controlled maceration and fermentation took place with selected yeasts and lasted for approximately 10 days. The wine was aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit.
TASTING NOTE:
Intense aromas of blackcurrants and wild fruits are complemented by subtle notes of spice and thyme in this full-bodied Negroamaro. Charmingly balanced and juicy on the palate, this is full of the flavours of Southern Italy.
GRAPES:
Negroamaro 100%.
