Our Commitment to Responsible Drinking

Our Commitment to Responsible Drinking

Drinking is only fun when done in moderation

At Ratcliffe & Co Wines, wine plays an important role in both work and leisure. As a wine retailer, it is unsurprising that we enjoy and appreciate wine. Whether we enjoy a glass in the evening to unwind or open a bottle of sparkling wine when socialising. However, our company also recognises that alcohol consumption requires moderation. While wine can enhance experiences and celebrations when enjoyed in moderation, overindulging risks negative health consequences. The responsible approach is to drink in a way that keeps intake at a level where it is pleasurable rather than potentially harmful.

What are units in alcohol?

Everything you need to know

Alcohol units are commonly referenced when discussing alcohol consumption, but what do they actually represent? Fundamentally, units provide a standardised measure for quantifying alcohol intake and can help ensure individuals do not consume too much.

The unit content of a drink is dependent on both its volume and alcohol percentage. Unfortunately, this means there is no single unit value uniformly assigned to each glass of wine. However, the following guidelines offer a general framework for estimating units:

White wine
The average glass of white wine contains approximately 12% alcohol by volume (ABV).
• 125ml – 1.5 units
• 175ml – 2.1 units
• 250ml – 3.0 units

Red wine
The average glass of red wine contains approximately 14% alcohol by volume (ABV).
• 125ml – 1.8 units
• 175ml – 2.4 units
• 250ml – 3.5 units

We clearly show the ABV on all of our wine product pages, you can also filter search results to show lower percentage ABV wines.

Our wine tastings

Wine tastings provide an opportunity to sample a variety of wines. However, it is important to keep in mind that while individual tasting portions are small, they can add up over the course of an event. Drinkers may end up consuming more wine than intended if not mindful. The following tips can help ensure one makes the most of a wine tasting without overindulging.

• Having water available
Drinking water regularly throughout an event will help keep you well hydrated.

• Having spittoons available
Spittoons allows tasters to expel wine without swallowing, if they do not wish to finish the entire sample.

• Having food available
Having food available during the tasting, in addition to eating beforehand, will help absorb some of the alcohol.
