Description
PRODUCER:
Ventolera is an exciting new venture between founder Vicente Izquierdo and one of Chile’s top winemakers, Stefano Gandolini. The vineyard, which was planted in 1999, is located in the region of the Leyda Valley, just six kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. The area is being singled out as being Chile’s newest and most radical cool-climate wine region, which is strongly influenced by the cooling effects of the Humboldt Current that flows up from the Antarctic. ‘Ventolera’ is a Spanish word which refers to this strong sea wind; its cooling influence is instrumental in producing wonderfully elegant wines.
VINEYARD:
The vineyard is located close to the sea, with sea breezes producing a cooling effect which, combined with the high levels of humidity, enhances the fruit flavours in the grapes. The vines are trained vertically with strict water control, which helps to moderate vigour and encourage small, concentrated grapes. Yields are approximately five tonnes per hectare. The vines are grown in granite and alluvial soils. All the grapes are hand-picked at optimal maturity levels, before being taken immediately to the winery in order to retain freshness.
WINEMAKING:
Hand-selected grapes were vinified in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of 23°C with a total maceration time of 18 days. The wine was aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months. This wine was bottled without fining.
VINTAGE:
The summer season was moderately warm with clear days. During March, the weather turned quite cloudy with morning mists. This cooler weather resulted in fruit with a very good balance between alcohol and acidity, along with a vibrant aromatic profile.
TASTING NOTE:
The vibrant bouquet of cherries and raspberries is a distinctive hallmark of the Leyda Valley Pinot Noir. Expressive and layered on the palate, with great freshness, purity of fruit and a long, structured finish.
GRAPES:
Pinot Noir 100%.
