Description
PRODUCER:
For Umberto Cesari, producing good wine in Emilia Romagna was a family tradition. It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana started their company in 1965, when they bought 20 hectares of land in the hills. Their ambition was to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, reflecting the typicity of the area. The winery has continually expanded and today the estate extends over 355 hectares divided into distinct vineyards; La Casetta, Parolino, Cà Grande, Laurento, Liano, Claterna, Miravalle and Tauleto each of which provides the perfect micro-climate for the vines planted. Their estate is sustainably cultivated and certified sustainable by SQNPI. As pioneers of quality, this family-run estate wins numerous of accolades every year and has been awarded ‘IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year’ four times in the last 15 years. The estate is now in the hands of Umberto’s son, Gianmaria Cesari, who follows in Umberto’s footsteps.
VINEYARD:
‘Tauleto’ is a dialect term applied by local farmers to a plot with abundant water resources. The springs running under the Sangiovese in the ‘Tauleto’ vineyard contribute to minimising water stress in the vines. The blend includes Uva Longanesi, an almost-forgotten native variety, which having been rediscovered and revived, produces wines with a high tannins and a flavor profile of cherry and strawberry, with vanilla and liquorice overtones. The average age of the vines is 20 years, producing a yield of 6.5 tonnes per hectare. The soil is rich in clay, which offers good water retention properties to nourish the vine during the warm, dry summers. ‘Tauleto’ is Umberto Cesari’s flagship wine and is only produced in the finest vintages.
WINEMAKING:
The grapes were harvested by hand and left to dry for two weeks prior to pressing. The musts fermented with selected yeasts in specialised temperature-controlled fermenters that allowed a lengthy maceration on the skins. The wine was aged for 24 months in Allier oak barriques and tonneaux of 225 litres, followed by a further six months in bottle before release.
TASTING NOTE:
A majestic wine, with expressive aromas of wild berry fruit and ripe black cherry, layered with nuances of rose petal, pungent balsam and spice. Succulent red fruit notes are complemented by spice, pipe tobacco, and graphite, with supple tannins and a lengthy, intense finish.
