ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
For Umberto Cesari, producing good wine in Emilia Romagna was a family tradition. It is here that Umberto and his wife Giuliana started their company in 1965, when they bought 20 hectares of land in the hills. Their ambition was to turn Sangiovese into a great wine, reflecting the typicity of the area. The winery has continually expanded, and today the estate extends over 355 hectares divided into distinct vineyards: La Casetta, Parolino, Cà Grande, Laurento, Liano, Claterna, Miravalle and Tauleto, each of which provides the perfect micro-climate for the vines planted. Their estate is sustainably cultivated and certified sustainable by SQNPI. As pioneers of quality, this family-run estate wins numerous of accolades every year and has been awarded ‘IWSC Italian Winemaker of the Year’ four times in the last 15 years. The estate is now in the hands of Umberto’s son, Gianmaria Cesari, who follows in Umberto’s footsteps.
ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
Umberto Cesari is located in eastern Emilia-Romagna, where the vineyards cover eight ‘poderi’ or fields. The estate is protected by the Calanchi Azzuri- the local badlands- a type of dry terrain where softer sedimentary rocks and clay-rich soils have been extensively eroded by wind and water. The Calanche Azzuri forms a crown-like structure of clay-based rocks. This combination of clay soils and the mild climate promotes ideal conditions for premium viticulture. The average age of the vines used to produce ‘Moma’ is 15 years, and they yield 8,000kg per hectare. Careful canopy management is undertaken to ensure the optimum amount of sunlight and shade, encouraging the clusters to reach optimum maturity. The vineyards are cultivated sustainably, and the grapes are hand-harvested.
THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
The grape varieties were vinified separately. Fermentation took place with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures in vertical stainless-steel tanks with a submerged cap and lasted for 12 to 14 days. The wine was then aged for six months in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak barrels, followed by a minimum of three months in bottle before release.
OUR TASTING NOTE:
Intense aromas of purple plums from the Sangiovese combine with softness and elegance from the late-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, all underpinned by sweet herbaceous notes to create a harmonious, smooth and velvety blend with a long finish.
GRAPE VARIETY:
Sangiovese 80%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%.
