Description
ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Cantina Tramin was founded in 1898 and has 310 member winegrowers who adhere to its strict directives on vine cultivation. The vineyards are an integral part of the enchanting and picturesque landscape of the Alto-Adige region in Northern Italy, covering 260 hectares situated on the sunny slopes of the region at altitudes ranging from 250 to 850 metres above sea level. In 2011, Cantina Tramin gained the “Double Stella” award – an extraordinary achievement, which is given to a winery for being awarded the prestigious “3 Bicchieri” 20 times by Gambero Rosso.
ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
The Gewürztraminer vines are planted between 400 and 500 metres above sea level in the small hamlet of Söll, above the village of Tramin. The vines are between 15 to 25 years old and yield 19 hectolitres per hectare. The soil is made up of clay and gravel, with a limestone layer from 20 to 100cm and porphyry bedrock. The vineyard site does not endure the winds from Lake Garda because it is planted in a small bowl formed by the surrounding hills – this shelter helps with the development of Botrytis Cinerea, which is essential to the production of high-quality late-harvest wine.
THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
The grapes were late harvested during the month of December. The hand-picked berries were delivered in small containers. The grapes were macerated for approximately 12 hours and then gently pressed under a pressure of 1.8 bar. The wine was fermented with wild yeasts at 19°C in barriques, followed by six to nine months’ ageing in the same barriques.
OUR TASTING NOTE:
Elegant and opulent, this sweet wine combines intense aromas of peach, apricot, lychee, mango and orange zest, with lifted floral notes and honey. Refreshing acidity harmoniously balances the rich, sweet and intensely aromatic palate, while refined and elegant mineral notes add complexity to the long-lasting finish.
GRAPE VARIETY:
Gewürztraminer 100%.
