Description
PRODUCER:
One of the main protagonists in the renaissance of Southern Italian wines, Feudi di San Gregorio had carved out a reputation for making truly world-class wines in less than 30 years. The company began in the mid-1980s with the aim of safeguarding local traditions and unlocking the potential of key indigenous grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina and Aglianico. In 2021, Feudi di San Gregorio received the B Corporation (B Corp) certification, rewarding companies whose aim is to be a positive and regenerative force for the environment and the community. The same year, Feudi was also awarded the Equalitas certification which officially recognises social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainability, through biodiversity, carbon and water footprint and ecological cultivation practices. As a multi-award-winning producer for its outstanding wines, Feudi di San Gregorio also features in the 2021 Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries and in 2024, Feudi was awarded The Old Vine Hero Award for Research on ‘The Patriarchs’, a study and catalogue of century-old Aglianico vines from Taurasi.
VINEYARD:
A provincial capital, the city of Avellino gives its name to this white wine, which was awarded the DOCG certification in 2003. A hilly territory enclosed between two Apennine chains, it is formed of 26 communes and is a highly parcelled wine-growing area. The grapes come from the ‘Pietracalda’ vineyard, which is emblematic of Irpinia’s biodiver¬sity, sitting among chestnut woods, fruit trees and an experimental garden of ancient plant varieties. The vines have an average age of 20-25 years and are grown in clay, calcareous soils at elevations of 400 to 600 m above sea level. Each vineyard is closely monitored with a meteorological station and combined with the technologies of the new state-of-the-art wine cellar; they ensure that each vintage comes as close to perfection as possible. The soil in the vineyards is predominantly volcanic, which imparts the distinctive minerality to the resulting wine. In accordance with the sustainable Equalitas certification, the vineyards are cultivated using ecological practices to maintain the equilibrium of the environment.
WINEMAKING:
Careful selection of the grapes took place before fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures of between 16 and 18 °C. This helped to capture all the purity of fruit and varietal characteristics of the Fiano variety. The wine was then matured for 12 months on its lees, with periodic bâtonnage for a greater texture and complexity. The distinctive bottle has been designed by Massimo Vignelli, embracing the wine with elegant fluting.
TASTING NOTE:
Inviting notes of chamomile, stone fruits and candied citron lead to a refreshing palate, with a lovely creamy texture and distinct mineral notes on the finish.
GRAPES:
Fiano 100%.
