ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Pol Roger is one of the few remaining great family-owned Champagne houses. An unrivalled reputation within the trade has been guaranteed by the consistent excellence of the wines: a tribute to the incredible diligence of the selection of the cuvées directed by members of the Pol Roger and de Billy families, in conjunction with the Président du Directoire Laurent d’Harcourt and the Chef des Caves, Damien Cambres. With stock equivalent to five years normal sales, a major investment programme, and among the coolest and deepest cellars in Epernay, the Pol Roger range of Champagnes offers a glimpse of the sublime.
ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
The 2018 Brut Vintage from Champagne Pol Roger is made from the traditional house vintage blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands and Premiers crus vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.
THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
Champagne’s geographical location engenders capricious weather. For this reason, since its foundation in 1849, Pol Roger has observed the tradition of not releasing vintage-dated champagne unless the climatic conditions have produced grapes of outstanding ripeness. Vintage champagne must, above all else, be balanced. This balance comes from healthy grapes, good potential alcohol and correct natural acidity. The grapes were traditionally vinified. The must underwent two settlings, known as débourbages; the first after pressing and the second during cold settling in stainless steel tanks at 6°C, lasting 24 hours. Slow, cool fermentation at below 18°C took place in stainless steel, with each variety and each village kept separately until final blending. The wine underwent full malolactic conversion. Secondary fermentation took place in the bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars, which lie at 33 metres below street level. The wine was kept here until it underwent the process of riddling by hand, something of a rarity nowadays in Champagne. Aged for seven years in the cellars, prior to release. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars, where it spent seven years maturing, prior to being disgorged and released.
OUR TASTING NOTES:
A complex bouquet of pastry, patisserie and dried nuts is harmoniously balanced with mineral and exotic pineapple notes. Round and elegant on the palate, a slightly zesty quality sets off the notes of brioche, patisserie and toast. Silky smooth and very fine with a tangy finish.
GRAPE VARIETY:
Pinot Noir 60%, Chardonnay 40%.
