Description
ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Established in Greve in Chianti in 1967 by the Sacchet and Zaccheo families, Carpineto farms 500 hectares of sustainably farmed land, spread amongst five carbon-neutral estates in the regions of Chianti Classico, Alto Valdarno, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello di Montalcino and Maremma. Carpineto holds the VIVA certification for sustainability, and is accredited ISO 14001 and IFS. Formerly IWSC Italian Wine Producer of the Year, Carpineto was also the first ever Italian winery to be awarded the IWSC International Winemaker of the Year. Antonio Zaccheo is now assisted by his son Antonio and daughter Francesca, who have both previously worked in the wine trade in the USA. Giovanni Sacchet’s daughter, Caterina, joined the Carpineto winemaking team after finishing her viticulture and oenology degree. Carpineto produces exquisite wines with elegant typicity.
ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
The estate covers 84.5 hectares of dry-farmed vineyards among the rolling hills of the Vino Nobile region of Tuscany. The vineyards are planted with a minimum of 70% Sangiovese (known locally as Prugnolo Gentile), Canaiolo and international grape varietals. These vineyards are trained according to modern trellising methods, with clones and rootstocks varying according to soil type. Planting densities here often exceed 8,500 plants per hectare, yielding wines of great concentration and finesse.
THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
Maceration of the skins took place for 10 to 15 days at temperatures of 25 to 30°C. The frequent pump-overs used special pumps which were designed to move the skins and seeds very gently. The wine was aged for two years in 5,500-litre oak barrels, while a small proportion was aged in French barriques. After bottling, the wine was aged in Carpineto’s temperature-controlled cellars for a minimum of six months before release.
OUR TASTING NOTE:
An extraordinarily elegant, ethereal wine delivering red fruits with hints of violet and oak spice. Beautifully balanced with an elegantly textured, velvety palate and a lovely, long finish.
GRAPE VARIETY:
Prugnolo Gentile 90%, Canaiolo Nero 10%.
