Greece sits at the heart of the ancient wine world, with evidence of production dating back around 6,500 years. On Santorini, volcanic soil, long sunshine hours, sea mist and strong summer winds shape the vineyards. The traditional kouloura (basket-shaped) training system also protects the vines, and some vineyards date back almost 3,000 years. As a result, the island produces rare and distinctive wines.

Indigenous grapes such as Assyrtiko create bone-dry, mineral wines with hints of smoke and salinity. In recent years, demand for Eastern Mediterranean wines has grown quickly, and Greek wines now lead this rise. Meanwhile, the wines of Northern Greece continue to grow in popularity, almost in line with the country’s tourism boom.
