Wine production in Armenia dates back 6,100 years. In 2011, archaeologists in Armenia discovered what is believed to be one of the world’s oldest-known wine production facilities. Located in the Areni cave complex, the facility was made up of a shallow basin to press grapes, storage vats and fermentation jars.

Armenia like neighbouring country Georgia, has emerged as a shining light in the Caucasus. This pioneering wine country played a huge role in the development of wine as we know it today and it has been suggested that the domestication of the Eurasian grape first occurred in the mountainous regions of Armenia before moving to the South.
