PRODUCER NOTE:
Château Fortia is a symbolic estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, both for its location and its roots that are closely linked to that of its appellation. In 1929 due to the efforts of Baron Pierre Leroy, Châteauneuf-du-Pape became the first appellation with a set of winemaking regulations. Today his descendants still continue the proud family tradition.

VINTAGE:
2016 has been hailed as one of the great vintages for reds. Warm conditions throughout the growing cycle produced small, concentrated berries, with lower yields. Bud break, flowering and véraison all occurred under warm conditions. September saw the warm days continue with cooler nights, producing beautifully balanced wines with great concentration in colour, flavour and tannins. A classic Rhône vintage.

VINEYARD:
Recent improvements in the vineyard have included the replanting of vines in the correct plots of land to suit the grape variety. The distinct terroir here consists of rounded quartzite stones from the Villa franchian period. These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, ensuring full grape maturity is reached. The yield is 30 hectolitres per hectare and the grapes are manually selected during hand harvesting to ensure only the highest quality of fruit is vinified.

WINEMAKING:
After rigorous sorting, the grapes were destalked. Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks with a long maceration lasting approximately five weeks. Malolactic conversion took place in large oak barrels. After racking, the wine was aged for 18 months in French oak casks, followed by further bottle ageing.

TASTING NOTE:
Complex notes of spice and graphite are underpinned by red fruit preserve. A very textured and silky wine with lovely, full concentration, the tight tannic thread gives it beautiful volume and remarkable length.

GRAPE:
Syrah 45%, Grenache 40%, Mourvèdre 15%.
