ABOUT THE PRODUCER:
Brown Brothers is one of Australia’s leading family-owned wine companies. Based in Milawa, Victoria for over 130 years, it is the Brown family’s sense of adventure and innovation has led them to where they are now: creating exciting new wines, pushing boundaries, and developing vineyards in some of the best regions in Australia. In 1989, Brown Brothers celebrated 100 years of winemaking and established the ‘Kindergarten Winery’ a mini-sized winery where experimental and innovative wines can be made on a smaller scale. In 2015, fourth generation Katherine Brown joined the winemaking team and became the first female winemaker in the family, working alongside awardwinning winemaker Cate Looney. For a company named Brown Brothers, today they are led by a team of eight women and two men. Their pioneering range of wines includes less known varieties such as Cienna and Tarrango and an alcohol-free duo named ‘Zero’. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, and all their wines are precisely crafted, with care, attention and consistency.

THE VINTAGE:
The 2018 vintage in Victoria was defined by a warm, dry growing season with belowaverage rainfall. A mild spring allowed for even flowering and fruit set, while the dry summer aided in slow, balanced ripening. These conditions yielded wines of excellent quality, with concentrated flavours, ripe tannins, and vibrant acidity.

ABOUT THE VINEYARD:
The Shiraz grapes are grown in the Heathcote region, which is located north of Australia’s Great Dividing Range, 170 kilometres inland from the Victoria coast. With fairly mild summers, Heathcote benefits from the effects of cool winds blowing up from the south that are channelled through the valleys of the Mount Camal Range. This provides an extended growing season encouraging a slow, steady ripening and greater complexity in the grapes. The Mount Camal Range is a major influence on the climate, the southern winds offer a cooling influence on the vineyards. The ancient Cambrian red soils are made up of weathered greenstone and are rich in minerals, with a great capacity for retaining water to nourish the vines throughout the growing season. The soils have superb heat retaining properties, storing heat throughout the day and radiating it into the evening, contributing to lengthening of the ripening period. The Shiraz variety thrives in the Heathcote region and produces small, concentrated and ripe berries, with balancing acidity.

THE WINEMAKING PROCESS:
Following harvest, the grapes were crushed and destemmed and fermented with selected yeasts on skins for five to seven days. Following malolactic conversion, the wine was matured for 12 months in new (10%) and older French and American oak barriques and puncheons.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
Lifted aromas of red and dark berry fruits are complemented by the classic peppery notes of Shiraz, through to a juicy and supple palate.

GRAPE VARIETY:
Shiraz 100%.
