Portugal
Portugal grows over 250 indigenous grape varieties (and a few international), so it is no wonder the wines have a unique personality and style.
There are only a handful of wine growing areas in the country, one of which, the most famous is Port from the Douro Valley. We are privileged to have one of the most admired producers on Port in our portfolio – Barros.
The array of indigenous Portuguese grape varieties is in part due to the differences in the soil and climate at each end of the country. Distinctive wines range from dry Muscat in the South region of Sétubal, to Alvariñho in the Northern Vinho Verde, each with a defining characteristic that warrants the demand from the UK market.
We are delighted to introduce two new wines from cutting-edge producer, Herdade do Rocim, which has wineries in both Alentejo and Lisbon. Led by winemaker, Pedro Ribeiro, Herdade do Rocim specialises in a trend that has been going for 2,000 years in Portugal – ‘talha wines’, the tradition of vinification in clay pots.
